ANGLO-IRISH TREATY
DUBLIN COMMENTS ON BRITISH ATTITUDE. NO INTER-EMPIRE COVENANT. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Wednesday, 7.45 p.m.) GENEVA, Dec. 15. The League secretariat has issued the text of a letter from the British Foreign Office, dated November 27th, in connection with the registration of the Anglo-Irish treaty of December, 1821, and the Free State Government’s request. The letter reiterates that the Government has consistently held that neither the Covenant nor any conventions concluded under the League auspices are intended to govern in-ter-Empire relations. Therefore, it considers article eighteen of the Covenant does not apply to the document under notice.
The “Daily Telegraph’s” Dublin correspondent reports that the Free State government has issued a statement, pointing out that it was the Free State’s duty, as a member of the League, to register the treaty made with England and failure to do so would have meant repudiation of the Covenant.
The “Daily Express’ ” Dublin correspondent says some quarters there regard the British action as a move to prevent an appeal to the League on the boundary question.
