AWAPUNI DRAWS FIRST BLOOD Eleven starters went oute to contest the Karere Hurdles, Rangl Thompson, on Sling Camp, signalising his return to the saddle by winning a fine race on the local chestnut celebrity. Santiago was a strong favourite, Highway and Starlnnd being evenly backed. When the field had settled down Highway was leading Ranui, Te Maire, Omahu and Penury Rose, with the favourite moving up from last. Good jumping was witnessed right round the course and passing the stand the first time the order was Ranui, Sling Camp, Highway, Santiago and Omahu, with Gladful tailing the field. On entering the back straight. Sling Camp and Ranui wore together, with Te Maire Improving his position. There was little change till the last hurdle, the field bunching. Sling Camp was first over and responding to a strong challenge from Santiago and a late run by gtarland, winning by a neck with Starland beating the favourite by three lengths. Then came Highway and Te Maire- .with Gladful last. CLANDHU A CERTAINTY.

All Gold was the only withdrawal from the Te Matai Hack Handicap, for which Clandhu was cacKcd down to a very short price. A good start was effected after Sensible had cansod some delay. Imperial Spark, from outside position, quickly took charge, followed by Anxious Momehts, Clandhu, Stream, Panim, and Sensible, with Viewpoint and Whotunui as whip—-pers-in. With half the course covered, Imperial Spark was still in the lead, with Anxious Moments, Stream, Clandhu, and Panim in close attendance. After leading into the straight. Imperial Spark was done with and finished up, with Viewpoint, at the wrong end. Clandhu came through below the distance and went on to win with the greatest of ease by half a length from Stream, who was hard ridden to beat Anxious Moments by a neck. Then, a length further back, came Whetunul. BENMURE BEST OF BIG FIELD.

Twenty hacks went to the barrier for the Woodhey Handicap, Entre Nous being nearly £IOO better backed than Loyal Maid. The others were backed decreasingly to nearly a three —figure dividend. Lively Fire, Bcnmure and Tinohari were first to show out. Axle and Waiotama being slowest to begin. At the end of a furlong Weeta had the lead, with Allmarirnba, Master Beckwith, Star Ranger, and Benmure discernible in the pack. Benmure led into the straight, with Lively Fire as his closest attendant. Then Benmure drew away and won by two lengths from Allmarimtaa, with Entre Nous a neck further back and Master Beckwith fourth. MOTLEY A MORAL,

The withdrawal of Kouex, Gaillard and Gamebag left five runners in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, Motley being backed down to a Gloaming price,

and the filly had the race in hand from the word “go.” The order out of the barrier was Father’s Voice,, Motley, Inferno, Bosh and Quiescent, Motley led into the straight, with Inferno running closely behind, and eventually won by a head, Quiescent being two lengths away and the bracketed horses next. Any who were under the impression that Inferno could have won had only to look at the condition of the animals as they returned to the scale. The time, 1.13, was a record for the race, being 3-5 of a second betteer than Desert Gold’s time in 1915. FIRST SALUTE’S SURPRISE.

The Prince of Wales' Handicap provided the finest race ever seen at Awapuni. There were 15 classy starters. Muskctoon, Stork, Mustard Po( # and Royal Box being withdrawn. It was a great betting race, Suggestion carrying £IOO more than Merry Day. Sunart and Alfort were evenly backed and there was fair support for some of the others. A splendid start saw the whole field break away in a line, and all raced neck and neck past the stands, and out of the straight, when it began to bo possible to sort them out. The leaders were Pcnelophon, Para, First Salute, Merry Day, Sunart, and Murihaupo. At the six furlongs peg the order was Pcnelophon, Para, Happy Days, Murihaupo, Sunart, First Salute, Alfort and Ihapotoa. Pcnelophon still led as heads wore turned for homo, Happy Days, Para, Alfort, First Salute, Sunart and Ihapotoa being next. These could have been covered by a blanket as they rushed up the straight, and as many names were being proclaimed, one hundred yards from the post First Salute went to the front and maintained his position, winning by a long neck from Alfort. with Para nearly half a length away, third, and Ihapotoa close up fourth, heading off Sunart. Scotch Mixture was last. The winner paid over a quarter of a century. BALLYMENA’S CUP. Ballymena was entrusted with nearly half the money on the machine in the Awapuni Gold Cup, and led all the way, winning by two lengths from Pilliewinkie. Winning Hit was second over the early stages, but was three lengths behind Pilliewinkie at the finish. Trespass was given fourth place. At the conclusion of the race Viscountess .Tcllicoe presented the handsome trophy to Mr B. A. Jacobs, who received it on behalf of Ballymena’s owner, Mr H. A. Knight. GLENROSS AGAIN. Glcnrosg was a warm fancy for the Linton Welter, and he madq, no race of it over the final stages. The earliest leader of the field of ten was Lady Gay, but The Curragh took charge for a couple of furlongs, and was then superseded by the favourite, who until then had been lying second. Glenross won by a length, with a similar distance between The Curragh and Merry Singer. Lady Gay fell from second to fourth place over the last 100 yards. This is Glenross’s third successive win and .The Curragh s third consecutive second. KING MERV CLOSES THE ACCOUNT. Of the 14 starters in the Telegraph Handicap, Rational was elected favourite, with good money also for King Mcrv and Last Crust. The last-named led momentarily, but King Merv then assumed command and was never headed, winning at the finish by two lengths from Last Crust, with Civility three lengths further back. Then came Quest Rational and Lady Fingers.
