OROUA DOWNS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A farewell dance was given on Thursday evening last to Miss McMurray, assistant teacher at Oroua Downs school (who has been appointed to a position in Mount Cook subnormal school, Wellington). Quite a good number of. parents and friends assembled to, bid Miss -McMurray good-bye and Mr Digging,- late headmaster of this school, in- presenting a gold wristlet watch to Miss McMurray, expressed the regret of the parents in losing so good ■ a teacher; During the period she was assistant teacher with him, Miss McMurray had proved one of the best teachers he had ever worked with. In explaining the position to which Miss McMurray was going, Mr Liggins said it was only about one teacher In two hundred ever attained the special knowledge to be appointed to a subnormal school. Mr Lig'gins, on behalf of the committee, expressed the regret they felt at losing Miss McMurray and congratulated her on. the promotion she had attained.. Mr Witton, on behalf of Miss McMurray, thanked the people for their generous gift and expressed the regret . Miss McMurray felt at leaving her friends and especially the children to whom she had become so attached.. Music was rendered by Messrs Pallister and Burling and Miss Conlan and Mr Witton acted as M.C. A splendid supper.was handed round by the ladies- and a- most enjoyable evening was concluded in the .late hours of the night. The great- event of the year (the annual sports), will take place here on Wednesday, the sth and by the forerunners of the event, promises to be the best ever held here. Meetings have been held frequently to arrannge the hundred and one things and now everything Is ready and preparations complete even to the weather, so it seems. The dance In the evening will surely attract the largest gathering yet in the hall.
