LAND DRAINAGE.

MANAWATU BOARD MEETS, The regular monthly meeting of the Manawatu Land Drainage Board was held yesterday, Trustee E. Wood presiding. ' Also present were Trustees P. J Small , N. I. Nielsen, H. J. Burrell and J. Collis Trustee Collis, who is now filling the scat on the Board left vacant by the late Mr A. Lancaster, was, welcomed by the chairman on behalf of the Board. A motion of sympathy was accorded the clerk, Mr F, W. Connell, in his illness. CORRESPONDENCE. Prom Mr L. B. Wall, Kairanga, In reply to a letter sent to Mr R. S. Wall, stating that the culvert across No. 4 Line drain was constructed after consultation with the late Trustee A. Lancaster in the absence of the overseer.—Left in the hands of the overseer. Prom the State Advances Office, Wellington, advising that it had been resolved to grant the Board a loan of £2OO for the purpose of constructing a floodgate and stop-bank and reforming a drain. —Received. Prom the family of the late Trustee A. Lancaster, thanking the Board for its expression of sympathy.—Received From the engineer of the Kairanga County Council, reporting that the construction of the reinforced concrete culvert with floodgate on ’Messrs Moore Bros’ property at Rangiotu had now been completed, the total cost being £l2O 12/7. —The overseer to con fer with the writer in regard to the expenditure of the balance of the £2OO the original amount set aside for expenditure on this work. Prom the Palmerston; ■ North Inspector of Health, stating that as a result of observation during the past month, he had been unable to find

anything wrong with tliq creeic-bed at the back of Longhurrit/Schpol.—lt was decided that a copy 'of the letter be forwarded to the Wanganui Education Board/ 1 • . ■ . i OVERSEER’S REPORT. In reporting on the different works harried out during the month, the overseer stated that in regard' to contracts, Mr D, Holland shad completed about 80 chains of "the Bufmythorpo Kairanga Road Drain; Mr Blade had completed about 65 chains of the Boundary Drain; Mr Voss had cleaned about 50 chains in No. 1. Aorangi Drain: Mr McKenzie was still working on Carmody’s Drain. With day labour, about 165 chains of No. 1 Line drain and 35 chains of Stubbs’ drain had been completed. Whiskey Creek had been let by contract to Messrs Holland and Co., at 7/4 per chain, and thp B.unnythorpe-Kairanga Drain at 4/ll per chain—Adopted.,

FLOOD-GATE QUESTION. The matter of consideration of a scheme for expenditure of the loan of £4,800 was the subject of some controversy, it being eventually resolved that the Manawatu-Oroua River Board be written to, asking that their engineer submit a report and estimate in respect to the erection of a floodgate at the Board’s outlet, and that the Board be asked whether it would contribute half the cost of the work, and that it be left in the hands of Trustee Nielsen to report to next meeting . It was further resolved that the services of an engineer be obtained, to submit specifications and estimates, the plans to be pointed out to the Board at a meeting to the arranged and that applications for the position bo called for.

GENERAL. It was decided that tenders be called for Burke's drain. A resolution was carried, that all outstanding rates be sued for if not paid within seven days. Accounts totalling £l7B 4/S were passed for payment.
