WAITUNA WEST.

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING. Fine weather prevailed for the above meeting which took place on the school grounds before a large attendance of the public, Including many visitors from Feilding. This was the first occasion upon which the gathering had taken place on the now grounds and great praise is due to the settlers for the enterprise displayed in making the place suitable to hold their' annual sports. There is stil more work ahead for the promoters before the grounds can be claimed as being ideal for such an event. However, the good work is to be gone on with in the near future, and by this time next year the writer hopes to have the pleasure of congratulating the residents of the “land of plenty” upon theip having such splendid recreation grounds. The success of last Saturday’s meeting was due in no small measure to the amount of energy the various officials displayed in carrying out their allotted duties. The Club is fortunate in having such a live president ip the person of Mr N. V, Shannon. Mention must also be made of the splendid services rendered by Mr J. Batchelar In his official capacity as “director of sports.” The duties of secretary and treasurer were in the capable hands of Mr N. J. Short who came through the strenuous day's work in great style. The club was extremely fortunate in having such capable stewards to look after the various events and as a result of their efforts, everything went off without a hitch. The programme included a number of dancing events, and the judges (Messrs T. Glenn and E Moon) and Pipers (M. tMcLeod and J Stuart) were kept busy throughout the day, as each event

brought forth many competitors. In the open hunters' competition the judges had their work cut out o separate the first and second horses. One very noticeable feature was the few starters in the open running events and in consequence Pearse and Bailey, both of Feilding, had little difficulty In monopolising the prize money. The other events were contested by large fields and altogether a most enjoyable day was spent by all and sundry. In the evening a concert and dance was held in the Hall and proved a great success.
