WHERE WERE OUR BUSES?

(To the Editor.) Sir, —where were our buses on Sunday to bi-ing the people from the Esplanade: two made their appearance but they were quite inadequate to cope with the traffic, and surely on such a fine day as Sunday it is up to the management of the Traffic Department to be alert and put on as many buses as possible, and run continually to the Esplanade on a fine Sunday when a band is playing. I have always been under the impression that the Council was short of buses, but this cannot be the case, as a bus ran to the Foxton Beach on Sunday with a picnic party. Surely this is a mistake In the management, as the ratepayers did not vote for the buses to be used for such purposes, and as this is not the first time that the Municipal buses hav e been used for catering for parties, It is high time that the ratepayers be up and doing, otherwise we shall have a Borough Council catering also for cheap law, contracting, butcher, baker drapery, grocery, and all other sections of trade and business including glaxo or dried milk. As a ratepayer who voted for the buses 1 beg to protest against this prostitution of the purpose for which we voted, and I trust there will be an appeal by the public when they know what is going on. There are other buses catering for work outside the borough, enough for all requirements. It Is unfair for the Borough Council to enter into competition against Its own ratepayers, and to the Inconvenience of the public generally. I am, etc,, LIVE AND LET LIVE.
