REPORTS

Mr. A. Newman, acting director of the Technical School, reported, that the roll stood at 837, an increase of 30 students over the same period last year. Eighteen students had been admitted during the month. The contractor for the engineering workshop extension and smithy had linished the work satisfactorily and had erected a new iron fence and gates on the Kingstreet side of the playground. Ninetynine entries had been made by the students in th 0 art, engineering and domestic competitions at the forthcoming A. and P. show. The asphalt, cricket pitch was finished and 32 loads of spoil had been distributed to improve the surface. Mr. J. Ireland had kindly donated four anvil blocks for use in the new smithy.—Adopted. Miss C. B. Mills, lady principal of the Girls' High School, reported that the school roll stood at 191, with an average attendance for- the first three weeks of 175.6. The annual school entertainment held on September 28, realised £BS. The expenses, many of which were initial ones, were fairly heavy, but the assembly hall fund would be increased by £47. The last hockey match of the season was played on October 6, when the school team drew with Dannevirke, the school retaining the. Bennett Cup. Th e school team won two out of three bas-ket-ball matches. November 1 had been fixed for the school's annual athletic sports. Miss Mills was requested to convey the appreciation of tho board to the school of \iH success in the entertainment and sports, and the report wjls adopted. The rector of the Boys' High School Mr. "Murray, stated in his report that the roll totalled 291. There had been one admission and ten withdrawals, and an average attendance for the month of 279. The school resumed after the term, holidays on September 19. Inspectors Parr and Kidson, of the Education Department, visited the school on September 26, 27 aand 28 to examine candidates for senior free places, and leaving certificates. The results of the examination would not be available until later in the year. The annual sports had been held on October 10, when the senior champion ship was won by A. Lassen and the junior by M. Williamson.. Thanks were due to Mrs. H. Palmer and committee of lad'os who organised a very successful dance in honor of the first XV, the proceeds of which went to the games fund —A vote of thanks to Mrs. Palmer and committee was carried, and the report was adopted. Prom the Education Department, stating that, the Public Works Department did not make tHe fire escapes required for the Boys' Hostel. These could be made by a local blacksmith for approximately £SO. If the board would state what the cost would be a recommendation would be made to the Minister for the purchase of tho fire escapes and their erection. —Estimates to be obtained.

From the Director of Education, advising that an amendment had been made to a clause in the regulations regarding free places in secondary schools, district high schools.technicai high schools and technical schools and classes. It was now provided that junior free places should in no case be tenable after December 31 of tne year in which the holders reach of age of 17. The clause would operate with respect to any junior free place holder who became 17 years of age after the opening' of the first term of this year. Any pupils, therefore, whose free places exph-ed.at the end of first or second terms might continue free until the end of the year.—Received.
