PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.

The Hon. Mr Ngata passed through Palmerston North yesterday en route to Napier. Mr L. Taylor, of the Ohakune milway staff, has been transeferred to Palmerston North. The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Catherine Lewis, wife of Mr W. H. Lewis, of 44 Terrace StYeet, at the ago of 49 years. The deceased lady, who was born in Milton, Otago, came to Palmerston North 28 years ago, and while in this district made many friends. She was particularly identified as a helper of charitable institutions. The Governors of the Teretaunga School for boys, at Havelack North, have appointed the Rev. J G. T. Castles, M.A., as headmaster, states a special wire to the "Times." Mr Castles was for some years on the staff of the Wellington College, and at present is on the staff of the Palmerston North High School. Members of the T.M.C.A. Hockey Club met last night to extend a welcome to one of their number, Mr N. Hansen, who has just returned from his tour with the hockey representatives in Australia. Mr Hansen gave an interesting account of his trip, and of the games. "Vocal items were contributed by Messrs. H. Woodhouse and J. Penny. Inspector W. H. MacKinnon, in charge of the police force of Palmerston North, has received notice of promotion to the position of superintendent to Christchurch, and will leave on September 14 to take up his duties. He will be succeeded here by Sub-Jnsepctor J. K. Simpson, of Christchurch, who has been promoted to an inspectorship. His Honour, Sir John Salmond, who has been presiding at the Palmerston North Supreme Court sitting, left yesterday for Masterton to relieve Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice. The latter, who was' presiding at the sittings in Masterton, took ill during the hearing of a case yesterday, and was compelled to take to his bed. Mr Justice Hosking, is expected to conclude the Palmerston North session either to-day or to-morrow.
