HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Palmerston North Horticultural Society was held on Tuesday night, Mr A. 13radfleld presiding. The Society's cottage garden competition scheme was J'ully dftscussed'. It; was decided, that the competition should be for the best kept cottage garden in Palmerston North limitejl to a quarter acre section or under for those who do not employ any labour. The competition shall include front and back garden, and the judging would bo influenced by (I) general lay out. (!') tidiness, (3) effectiveness,! (4) best kept stocked and cultivated.! Judging will take place about a week before the Summer Show on November 2t next. Xo competitor will ! know when the judge is coining - . The; Society hopes to arrange for a donation of a challenge cup to be won and held from show to show. There will also be cash prizes. Entries for! the sumemr competition will be received by the secretary at the Spring Show on September 1:' and 13, If was decided to hold lectures on horticulture the first lecture to be given on Wednesday, August 8. The first lectare wil lbe given by Hr A. ,T. Shailer who will also give a demonstration of rose pruning. Four shows and four lectures will bo held during the year.
