It is understood that if he had not acted voluntarily he would have been deposed. The Government report indicates that there has been a deliberate perversion by highly-placed officials in the State of Nabha of the administration of justice for the purpose of damaging the Slate of Patiala, in-, eluding systematised attacks by means of intentionally fabricated cases and the deliberate conviction of innocent persons. The Maharaja of Nabha ignored the official warnings on the subject, and the Government concluded that he was countenancing these illegal proceedings. The Government hesitated to accept Irs abdication, but finally decided to take over the administration of Nabha forthwith. The Maharaja abdicates in favour of his son. aged four, undertakes to reside outside the State, to pay substantial recompense to Patiala, and to remain loyally obedient to (he Brit'sh Crown and the Government of India. He will be permitted to retain his titles and will receive an allowance from the State.
