KAIRANGA COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Kairanga County Council was held yesterday. Mr. P. J. Small presided and there were, also present: Messrs. S. R. Lancaster, W. 11. Hopcroft, J. Batchelar, M. A. .Moody, C. Anderson, J. A. Cheetham and D. Collis. CORRESPONDENCE. From the. Main Highway Board, regarding the grouping of counties into highway districts. It was proposed that Wellington West Highway District No. 9, in which the council should be included, should consist of the. Manawatu, Oroua, Horowhenua, Kairanga, Pohangina, Hutt and Makara Counties.—Grouping'approved. From the chairman of the Feilding Agricultural College, further to tho deputation from the High School which waited on the -council at its last meeting, expressing disappointment at the council's decision to make no grant to the college. The writer enclosed a clipping of the report of Kiwite.a County Council's meeting, at which if had made a grant of £2OO, which made its total contribution £SOO —Decided to reply again thae the council was not in a position to assist. Prom the Manawatu Gorge-road Board, enclosing copy of balance-sheet ahd advising that the council's quota would b e £77 16/6. In connection with the road loan of £20,000, in order to provide money for continuing road work during the present financial year it would be necessary for the council to arrange for the second half of its loan, amounting £667. —Decided to raise the loan. From Mr. John Rainforth, slating that Milford and Slack's roads were at rimes almost impassable for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. He suggested that the council use the best quality metal Cor repairing those roads and that the footpath along Mil fordroad be extended to the point where the metal carts entered the Hunt Club's property.—Mr. Rainforth to be informed thaj; the council would see that the trouble would not occur next year. Prom Mr. J. H. Faulkner, drawing attention to the precarious state of Faulkner's-road, and asking permission to take three or four loads off the bank of the hill for filling purposes.— Referred to the engineer and permission to take clay granted. ENGINE E R'S REPORT. The exceptionally wet weather during the. month had been very hard on the roads, many of which were in a rather bad state, slated the engineer (.Mr. Wright)'. Mangaone Ruling: The large reinforced concrete culvert on Uoberts Line had been completed, filling replaced and road again opened to traffic. A pipe culvert at junction of Settlers and Newbury Lines had been lengthened 12ft. to improve turn at that point. Bridge over Mangaone stream, Allison's Bine-: The proposed new truss bridge had been cresigned, and list for hardwood timbers required sent, to different linns for quotations. Taonui riding: The Idling in connection with culvert recently lengthened on Riddiford-road had been completed. Fitzherbei't riding: Owing to the continued high-level of Ihe water, very little work had been carried out during the month on reinforced concrete bridge over the Tiritca' stream. The two land piers had been put in, and everything made ready to put in centre pier when weather conditions were more favourable. Boad maintenance.—This had been! a heavy item during the month,besides Ihe council's own teams and motor-1 itticks, about 12 outside teams hiving I been employed in carting out metal for repairs. Lengths on Kairanga-Bunnythorpe-road and Rangltlkel Bine had been repaired with very lighj. coats of crushed metal, scarified and rolled in. All the roads in the Fitzherbert riding and the Karere-road from Foxton Bine to .Manawatu liiver had been advertised as.closed to heavy traffic until further notice. GENERAL. It was resolved that workmen living in the council's houses should be allowed to keep only one cow on (he council's property. The Filzherbert ranger reported (hat IS head ot slock were impounded during fh e month. Accounts amounting to E334S 11/10were passed for payment.
