PRICE-CUTTING.
OF DOMINION-MADE GOODS.
STRONG PROTEST FROM MERCHANTS. CONCERTED ACTION DESIRED. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. At. a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Industrial Association to-night the chairman (Mr W. J.Jenkin) said that a proposal had been made that the Association should go into the matter of the cutting of the prices of New Zealand-made goods by retailers. A joint letter from Mr W. Bottrell, for the wholesale merchants, and Mr D. K. Haberfield, for the retail grocers, | was read, stating that for many months past the cutting of New Zea- | land-made goods by some retailers through the Dominion had been going on to such an extent that it was | felt by many manufacturers, mer- ; chants and retailers alike (who were desirous of giving everyone a fair deal) that the time for concerted acition had arrived. The writers would | suggest that the executive of the Association should go into the matter, | and if agreeable call a meeting of all I manufacturers in the Association to ! discuss the question from its various ’angles, with the ultimate idea of apI preaching the Government to bring in legislation giving the manufacturer the right to govern the selling price |of his goods if he so wished. Much |work had already been done by individuals, but it was realised that nothing of a beneficial character could be achieved unless by the united action of all concerned. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the matter and report to a later meeting of the executive.
