PEKIN APPEALS TO POWERS

The Government has asked the Powers to extend their ultimatum, declaring that the Government had offered the bandits full compliance with their terms, but that the latter were continually changing their demands, now insisting upon cash in hand and the withdrawal of the Government troops before any prisoners are freed. HANKOW THREATENED. MACHINE GUN PATROLS GUARDING TRAINS. (Received Tuesday, 7 p.m.) PEKIN, May 14. One thousand soldiers and bandits from Honan arrived ten kilometres from Hankow and demanded 150,000 dollars and ammunition as the price of departure. The demand being refused, the foreigners became alarmed and fearing further trouble armoured cars, each carrying 40 picked soldiers with machine guns, are being attached to the trains on the Pekln Hankow railway.
