MAROONED.

TWO FOODLKSS DAYS, i Though Wairarapa district has not ■been subjected to hardships like those felt in the South Island, many instances arc reported of considerable inconvenience and hours of anxiety. Not the least of these is the case of four painters who were engaged by Messrs Cole Bros., on the decoration of a house at Cavelands. The job was not expected to last more than three days and only sufficient food was taken to last' the men this period, Before the expiry of the work, the floods occurred, and the house, being at the end of a private road ,was completely cut off from outside communication through the Taueru River flooding. Realising that a serious food shortage might arise before the stores could be replenished, the painters decided to ration the food which was left, but it was soon exhausted and the chance of getting further supplies looked hopeless. The manager of the firm was rommunicated with. He attempted to get stores to the marooned party but' could not get within half a mile /of the house. After two days of patient waiting the flood subsided, and the workmen were met by their employer with a load of provisions, which received very short' shift at the hands of the famished painters, who were otherwise none the worse for their experience.
