A PRICE ON HIS HEAD.

WILD PIG MENACED. An official of the Palmerston North, branch of the State Forest Service, informed a “Times” reporter on Sat-, urday that the wild pigs in Taranaki, are on the increase, and are menacing, the prosperity of the whole of the, back country farmers. Last year, as, many as 80 per cent, of lambs, in, some cases, wer kileld by wild-pigs, besides damage being done to the root crops, grazing and fencing. The Forest Service is endeavouring to help the farmers by eradicating, or at least thinning out, the pigs. Poison, of various kinds (phosphorised pollard, and strychnine, and other), has been tried without effect. It has now been decided to pay 1/ per head for all wild pigs killed, and it is thought that this will result in at least 5,000 Captain Cookers being killed this winter before the lambing season commences.
