A sensational discovery was made at Helena Vale racecourse (Western Australia) on April 2S. which pointed to a battery having: been used there on that day. The barred appliance found on the course was a hand battery, about three inches long-, resembling- a twelve-bore cartridge, with two needles projecting about an eighth of an inch at one end. It was reported to the stipendiary stewards that W. Wafts, who rode Filandria in the Farewell Welter Handicap, had been seen to throw the battery away on pulling up. The battery was picked up and found to be fairly powerful—quite strong enough to give a horse a shock. Filandria got away badly, and, although at one stage he made up a lot of ground, he finished last. On the Monday following Watts was disqualified for life. The jockey affected has protested his innocence, and has lodged an appeal. The locally trained pair, Hady Kotiripo and Gold Star, are located at Wanganui. Explorer is jumping the uig country in good style at Wanganui. Gladful, Vagabond. Trespass, Boncttcr, Martian Miss, Birkenella and Bonrina will represent the Kcmball stable at the Wanganui meeting. All of them are booked to leave Masterton to-day. Tinoretto, winner of the Shorts Handicap on the sec(ond day at Hawera, was unlucky on the opening day, and those who noticed his running profited by the good dividend he paid on the second day. Tinorotfo was bred by W. G. Stead, but he carried the colours of Mr. C. Emanuel. He is by Kilboy from Gold Painting, who was by Boniform from Ormolu, an imported mare by Orme. A case of mysterious disappearance has occurred in connection with a rising three-year-old by King’ Tracey, says the Bunedin writer, “ Sentinel." He got out 'of his paddock at Caver, sham over three weeks ago, and, despite a wide searcth, cannot be found. He is a bay with black points, stands about 15 hands, ragged mane and longish tail. He has a lump in his gullet close to the hend. and generally shows a fair amount of quality and breeding. The "pressing” question is best answered by sending your suit or trousers to Collinson and Cunninghame’s for treatment in the Hoffman steam press. Sterilises, rejuvenates and presses perfectly. Suits for 5/, trousers for 2/ *
