NOTES. Loc'lson is a good sort, and is always worth a trifle when the going is heavy. At the recent Feildlng meeting Otapawa showed a fair amount of pace, and it was not surprising to see her show up at Hawera yesterday—great prices both times. The English-bred Musketoon paid a big price when he bobbed up at Hawera yesterday. Treadwell is still unlucky. Correspondent is racing very consistently. Birklc cost the local punters a bundle of money at Hawera. He is not much good in the mud. If one had invested a pound on all the horses carrying the minimum at Hawera yesterday, one would have showed a profit of close on £3O. Nominations for the Auckland, and Otaki meetings close to-night. The committee of the Ashburton County Racing Club met on Wednesday morning, and after seeing the track decided to postpone the autumn meeting from Friday and Saturday till the corresponding days in next week. Though it was reported that Coalition had bidden fa/rewell to the race tracks, he is being regularly hunted with the Dannevirke hounds. He looks in good health, and may be raced again at some of the minor North Island meetings.

Three mares from the Eldcrslie Stud are now on their way to England where they will join the stud which Mr Jl B. Reid is starting at Newmarket. The mares shipped Home are:—Kilcullen, by Kilbroney— Esther, by Santry—Persepolis (sister to Zinfandel). Ascot Gold Cup, by Persimmon; Kilrea, by Kilbroney— Arai-te-uru, by Birkenhead Fair Nell by Apremont—ldalia (dam of Sir Modred, Enid, etc.); Gold Pippin, by Kilbroney—Orange Pippin, by

Wiliam the Third —Field Sable, by Bend Or. All the mares are 'in foal to Archery to English time. Archery is by Tracery from Port Sunlight, by Sundridge from Wife of Rath (sister to Chaucer and half-sister to SwynL'ord), ■ by St. Simon.

Racing men in Dunedin think that the sporting vote in Oamaru may have turned the election in Mr Macphcrson's favour, or the same thing against Mr Lee, says the Dunedin "Star." It is more than a supposition that the Awarua election last year was influenced by the voting power of the Winton Club, and the same sort of influence may have operated at Oamaru, not because of any antagonism to Mr Lee personally, but because he was the representative of the Government that is grinding the life out of the racing by heavy and what seems to the racing men to be unfair taxation. The two racing clubs in Oamaru have suffered by that taxation, the Jockey Club severely, and it is quite possible that the local sports took this opportunity of revenging themselves upon the Government, whose taxation has provoked boiling indignation there and elsewhere. Such, at any rate, is the opinion at the street corners."
