HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

AUTUMN SHOW. A PRONOUNCED SUCCESS. The autumn show of the Palmcr£ton North Horticultural Society, held yesterday afternoon and evening, in the Empire Hall, proved a great success, setting up a record, and being eclipsed only by the summer show, which had 55G entries, as against 411 for yesterday's function. Despite the inclement' weather, the building was packed with people to view a gorgeous display of blooms and decorative work.

The latter section was the most magnificent of all. The work was highly artistic, and because of the equality of the exhibits, the judge, Mrs. J. Barlthrop, stated that she had extreme difficulty in selecting the wlnr.ers. The winning decorated table with embellishments, by Mrs. T. George, of Palmerst'on North, in the amateur section, was the feature of the show. The exhibits of the children in the decorative classes were excellent, being even in advance of those of the adults. »

The cut blooms section was a great improvement on last year. Although the exhibits would have been better if the show had been held a week earlier, the time being just a little lat'e for the blooms, they were nevertheless of admirable beauty, and made an excellent show. Although several classes of chrysanthemums in the open section were rather neglected, the display of these flowers was on the whole magnificent, and they were certainly most in evidence. The prize bloom of the show was an " Edith Cavell," exhibited in the novice class by Miss P. C. Lemmon, of Levin.

The vegetable section, though lacking somewhat in entries, was of exceptional merit, while the other sections were well represented.

The show was opened at 2 p.m. by the patron of the society, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P. The president, Mr. J. W. Sinclair, first spoke a few wWds, thanking the exhibitors for their display, and he was followed by Mr. A. R. Rush who addressed the gathering on behalf of the. Fruitgrowers' Association, of which he is president. Mr. Nash then declared the show open. In the afternoon, the attendance was about 350, and full advantage was taken of the opportunity to partake of afternoon tea, arrangements in this connection being in the capable hands of Misses Just, Gillies, George and a band of helpers. Mrs. Newth was in charge of a produce stall, whilst sweets were also procurable.
