AMERICAN SHIP’S PLIGHT

PASSENGERS ALL IN BOATS,

The passenger liner, City of Honolulu, from Honolulu for Los Angeles, is afire .500 miles west of I.os Angeles. Wireless messages stated that she was lowering her boats and asked for assistance. Her position was 31 degrees north, 131 west. Later messages state all the passengers had been transferred to the lifeboats. It is believed there were 400 aboard the liner, which -was formerly the North German-Lloyd Friederich der Grosse ,and latterly had been running between Honolulu and San Pedro. The fire proved to be uncontrollable and the ship was completely abandoned. The steamer Enterprise is expected to arrive in the vicinity of the boats at noon, and it is also stated that a ship not named is picking up the passengers. ALL RESCUED. ’‘ I WIRELESS OPERATOR’S PLUCK. (Received Friday, 8.25 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 13. The entire list aboard were rescued from the lifeboats by the freight steamer West Farrellon. According to latest advices the yacht Cassiana en route to Honolulu stood by the burning steamer, aiding the dlscmbarkmont of the lifeboats. The passengers are mostly residents of San Francisco, Los Angeles and other Californian cities en route from Honolulu. The latest advices state that the list aboard the steamer is 73 passengers and 145 of the crew. All were saved. Commendation is expressed of the bravery' of the radio operator (W. H. Bell), who is on his first sea assignment. He remained aboard until the flames drove him and Captain Lester off the ship, which was then a veritable furnace. The West Farrallon sent a wireless message to the waiting army transport Thomas, to which the passengers will be transhipped, permitting the West Farrallon to proceed to her destination.
