THE LEAGUE GAME.
AT THE SHOWGROUNDS TO-DAY. The South Auckland League football team arrived in Palmerston North yesterday morning and will commence its tour to-day by playing the Wellington representative team on the Showgrounds. The match will commence at 2.30 p.m. In conversation with a “Times” representative last night, .Messrs F. T. Wilson and St. C. C. Macdonald, the managers, said that since arriving here a number of reports had reached their ears that the League players were professionals and receiving payment for their tour. As a matter of fact, the team was travelling at its own expense, each member having in addition put £lO into the guarantee fund. The visitors hold the Northern Union Challenge Cup, and as the Wellington combination is a fast one, a fine and rapid exhibition of the League game should be witnessed. There are many points of difference between this game and the old Rugby code, tending to keep the ball continually in play and making for fast football. The game is played with 13 men a-side. When a ball is kicked out on the full on the field of play it is ta.xen back and scrummed where kicked from. If the ball bounces out, a scrum ten yards in from where It crossed the line. A player’s progress stopped by an opponent, the latter must immediately release his hold of that player, and the man with the ball must imediately get to his feet and drop the ball in front of him and play it with his foot. A special feature is the elimination of the line-out, and a quick and lively scrum. When a scrum is formed all the back players of either side must be behind the scrum and not in a lino with it. A player infringing this rule is penalised in the position where the breach occurs by a free kick. Two points are awarded for any goal and 3 for a try. A player may speculate a goal from a rolling ball and claim a goal. A ball is never out of touch unless it hits the ground over the touch-line. This game is played with the advantage rule, i.e., a knock forward which gives the opposing side the advantage is not penalised, but if the man or side making the breach thereby gets an advantage, a scrum is formed where the breach first occurred. A player kicking for a goal places the ball himself and is free of all charges from opponents, who must turn their backs to the player kicking. Two games will also be played by South Auckland against Hawke’s Bay. the first at Napier on Saturday and the second at Hastings on Wednesday, September 13. The following will represent South Auckland: Full-back, T. Mahuta(l); three-quarters, R. Guthrie (2), G, Raynor (3) B. Pati (captain) (4); five-eighths, W. Hall (5), L. Stewart (6); half, T. Peckham (7): forwards, L. Hutt (8), F. Raynor (9), I. Gainsford (10), J. Bishop (11), J. Peckham (12), W. Paki (13). Reserves. Dent, Kelly, Sherlock, Raynor. REPORT PREPARED BY ITALIANS [By Electric Cable —Copyright,] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Tuesday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, September 4. The Australian Press Geneva correspondent states that the Mandates report was prepared on behalf of the Council by the Marquis of Imperaldi, who submitted it to the Council.
