INTER-ISLAND RUGBY. SOUTH NARROWLY DEFEATS NORTH. A STRENUOUS ENCOUNTER. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. The North V. South Island Rugby football match was played on Saturday at Eden Park before a fair crowd. The ground was greasy as a result of the recent heavy rains. : It was a strenuous game from beginning to end, tho South winning by nine points to eight. Play was mostly confined to the forward line, but occasionally the Southern backs gave glimpses of a high standard of Rugby, but the North Island forwards were slightly better than the South vanguard. In the first spell, Brownlee and Hickey scored for the North Island, one try being converted. In the second spell, Steele, Williams and Fitzgerald scored for the South Island, all the tries being unconverted. During the match, Bellis, Borrell and O'Brien, of the Northern team, retired with injuries, and Steele and Whyte, of the South Island team, went off for a similar cause. Mr W. Meredith was referee.
