HURRICANE AT UTIKU.
DOES GREAT DAMAGE. TOWN HALL AND DWELLINGS WRECKED. TAIHAPE TOWN ESCAPES. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. At 1.30 o'clock on Saturday, a hurricane of 30 minutes' duration passed over the Taihape district, wrecking many buildings at Utiku. The town hall was blown into a mass of wreckage, and a piano in the building was smashed to pieces. Messrs Gibbs Bros.' factory was blown down and extensive damage done to stock. At least ten houses were unroofed, and practically all fences are down and many chimneys crashed to the ground and trees were also uprooted. The gale was confined to a narrow strip, clearing everything in its way. Taihape was not damaged.
