AUSTRALIAN POSTAL SERVICE.
LESS BUSINESS, BUT MORE REVENUE. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] TAust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] MELBOURNE, July 1, The report of the Post and Telegrauph Department for the year ended June 30, 1921, contains some interesting items. The profits on the working totalled £1,143,767, and are chiefly due to the increased postal charges. Telephones earned a profit of £222-175, but the telegraph branch made a loss of £8312, The report says: Although the revenue increased as the result of higher postal charges, there was actually a falling off in the business. This was partly due o these increased rates. During the year the department handled 031,000,000 letters. Careless addressing resulted in over £178,000 worth of money and valuables landing in the'Dead Letter Office; 549 of these letters, containing £5863, had no address whatever. Money orders and postal notes issued by the department totalled nearly £17,500,000.
