HERRIN MINE RIOTS.
MAJORITY OF VICTIMS AMERICAN BORN. [By Electric Cable —Copyright] [Aust and N.Z. Cable Association.] NEW YORK, June 30. Careful and independent inquiry indicates that the majority of the murdered Herrin strike-breakers, and also the majority of the attacking mob, were not foreigners, but were American born. The extraordinary apathy of the local authorities, and the absolute silence of the eye-witnesses or participators in the massacre, regarding the identity of the leaders or personnel of the mob, has frustrated official and other efforts to pin the responsibility on any particular faction. The Herrin district has a comparatively small foreign element, which doubtless was represented in the mob, but the majority were Americans of the usual mining class. They continue to smile cynically over the affair, stating that they did not regret it, and that the strike-breakers got what they deserved. The laxity of the local officials, who are making little effort to bring the murderers to justice, is causing increasing indignation over the country.
