His Honour Mr. Justice Hosking, leaves for Wellington by train this morning. Dr. McLean, surgeon with the Maweon Antarctic expedition, is dead, states a Sydney cable. Mr. W. H- Gaisford has been elected Master of the Dannevirke Hunt, vice Mr. R, Reake, resigned. Lieutenant-Colonel H. E. Avery, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, returned from England by the lonic on Monday. The Hon. Sir James Carroll, M.L.C. was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday, and was staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr Tolley, of Messrs Hodder and Tolley, Palmerston North and Pending, leaves for Wellington to-day, en route to Austraia. Mr. F. Rear, of the Palmerston North P. and T. Office, will proceed to Shannon as relieving postmaster at the end of the present week. Mr W. T. White, of the Auckland staff of the Bank of Australasia, has been appointed manager of the Waverly branch of that bank. Mr. E. W. Sofie'ld. who is well and popularly known throughout the Manawatu district, and in other parte of New Zealand, has taken over the Hotel Imperial in Palmerston Noith. Mr. G. C. Keeble was elected to the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association at yesterday's meeting, to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. A. Conway's appointment as a vice-president of the Association. The death occurred suddenly in Mastarton on Monday afternoon of Mr. William lorns, one of the oldest residents of the Wairarapa. and a well-known native interpreter. He was severity-two' years of age. Mr. W. Mead has resigned his position with the Tourist Department as caretaker of Tongarlro National Park, on account of ill-health, and Mr. Cowley, formerly a guide at Mount Cook, has been temporarily appointed to the position. Mr. A. L. Anderson, who recently retired on superannuation from the position of manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Hastings, left by Monday's mail train for Wellington en route to Adelaide, South Australia, where he intends residing. Mr. C. F. Spooner. of Palmerston North, 'has boon confined to his residence for some days with a severe attack of bronchitis. He was able to attend to business for a short time yesterday, and it is hoped that he will be fully recovered in a day or two. Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice) arrived in 'Palmerston North by the Auckland express yesterday afternoon, and will preside over the continuation of the Supreme Court sessions iiv Palmerston North this morning. At the meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools' Board the resignation of Miss J. McLeod, M.A., who has been on the staff of the Boys High School for the past seven years, was received; and- accepted with regret. Miss McLeod has accepted the position of first assistant at the Waitaki Girls' High School. The death occurred at Taihape last week of Mr. George McGlashan. third son of the late Mr. W. McGlashan and Mrs. McGlashan of Petane. The deceased, who was an old boy of the Clive and Napier Main Schools, was until his death a mill manager at Waihi and Taihape. Holland (Newbury) has been elected a junior associate member To the annual meeting of delegates representing the Wellington-Waira-rapa Farmers' Unions, Mr W. Hunter (of Palmerston), secretary of the Wellington provincial branch of the Union, wrote vesterday tendering his resignation after twenty-years' service. The chairman (Mr Morrison) said Mr Hunter had been in office since the inception of the Union. He was sure there had not been a more practical secretary in New Zealand. He had carried out his duties in a way that could not be improved upon. It was unfortunate that, owing to ill-health. Air Hunter had to retire. They would miss his familiar face and genial disposition. It was the sincere wish of the conference that Mr Hunter would soon recover his normal state of health Messrs C.
