PHIL-HARMONIC SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING, The annual general meeting of the Paimerston North Philharmonic Society was held in the Kosy Hall last night, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., occupying the chair. The annual report stated that, the past year has been a most successful one. Two concerts were held, one in April and the other in September, and these were well patronised by the public. The assistance of four professional artists was obtained. Miss Mabelle Esquilant and Mr. Hubert Carter contributing to the first concert programme, and Miss Phyllis Massey and Mr. Gordon Shortt performing at the second. The support accorded the two entertainments had proved that the public appreciated the quality of the vocal and instrumental numbers presented. The membership totalled 200, of whom 50' were active and the remainder honorary members. In addition to the two concerts, a special benefit entertainment had been rendered by the society in the interests of the Willard Home, a substantial sum being obtained. Throughout the year active members had stood loyally by the society, practices being regularly attended and the vocal standard had improved to an appreciable extent. The conductor, Mr. J. Holmes Runnicies, had spared no pains in helping active members to take their respective parts with credit, and the heartiest thanks were due to him for his unflagging interest and untiring efforts on the society's behalf. During the coming year it was hoped that the society would again merit the support of the general community, and a determined endeavour would be made to still further enhance its vocal standard. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. In speaking to the motion for the adoption of the report and balancesheet the chairman paid tribute to the unselfish energies of the conductor Mr. J. H. Runnicles, who had worked very hard to bring the Society up to its present high standard of musical attainment, and bespoke for him the- continued support of members. , __ A donation of £5 by Mr. A.
