Manawatu Daily Times [ESTABLISHED 31st MAY, 1875.] MONDAY, MAY 15, 1922. BRITISH MOTIVES-GERMAN METHODS.

The inborn pride of the Britisher in those best attributes of his racegood cheer, humanity, loyalty—cannot be affected by the ravings of a tew one-eyed agitators. These things arc safe, because they have become 'instinctive and inherent. Just so is our hatred of the opposite characteristic of a people whose lust for power involved the world in suffering. But these things must not blind us to the economic necessity for a study and adoption of their economic methods, by which alone may we raise the mass of the people to material prosperity. Motives are an entirely different matter, and for British motives we need have no concern. German motives presumably are for greed and power, | ours for freedom and peace, and so, perhaps, will both be perpetuated for a thousand years. Methods may be changed or adopted in a year. . The preacher and the teacher have made our introspection and study of motive a science. Who takes their place in teaching us the study of method? National method to Us utmost detail is a dead language to us. The Japs, with their motive a mystery and somewhat an apprehension to the world, are out to capture the world’s method, and they are doing it with amazing swiftness. Can our racial motive be perpetuated while we Neglect the method by which alone' it may survive? This thought may suggest to our legislators the absolute necessity for an annual visit to every country in the world during the recess. With this alone in view we could afford to pay them £IOOO a year. By what right do they claim to represent the people of New Zealand if they are compelled to work at their own petty concerns for nine months out of twelve?
