TREATMENT OF GOITRE.

MINI STERIAL STATED IE N T (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. The Hon. C. J. Parr, replying to a southern paper’s comments to the effect that the Health Department is not doing anything in the -way of experiment and treatment of goitre, said he had received, a report for Dr Wilkin, Director of the School of Hygiene, w'ho stated that an experiment in the treatment of goitre in school children, by the administration of very small doses of iodine, was being carried on by Dr Eleanor Baker, school medical officer at Christchurch. It will, however, be necessary to study the effects for a number of years before a decided pronouncement can be made as to permanent results. Five hundred and ninety-six children had been under treatment, and observations had also been kept of 756 untreated children. So far the results are, on the whole, very satisfactory, and the experiment had proved well worth while. Similar results had been obtained by Dr Gunn, school medical inspector at Wanganui. Mr Parr said ho was asking Dr Baker and Dr Kerens, of the Medical School at the University of Otago, who had been making investigations, to report specifically on their treatment, methods, and experiments.
