GUN-SHOT WOUND.
AWAHURI RESIDENT'S DEATH. William John Port, aged 50 years, a well-known farmer of Awahuri, was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital on Friday evening suffering from a pea-rifle bullet wound in the head. He died early yesterday morning. Deceased had been to Feilding on Friday, and having returned and had his evening meal, he proceeded, unaccompanied, to a whare near the house. Shortly after 7 o'clock the inhabitants heard the report of a gun and immediately commenced to investigate. Mr Port was found lying on the floor of the whare in an unconscious condition. He had a bullet wound in the centre of his forehead, and was holding a pea-rifled He was immediately removed to the Palmerston Hospital, where he died as stated. On his return to Feilding Mr Port appeared to be in his usual state of health. An inquest is to be held. Deceased was for many years a resident in the Ashhurst and Pohangina districts, and was very highly respected.
