The light-weight apprentice Fanning is to have the mount on Prince Carl in the Ohinemuri Cup. It is understood that Mr -E. Brereton has taken over the control of the horses racing in the colours of Mrs Perry and W. F. Desha. ’ Aureate, the full sister of Desert Gold, has not been nominated for the big autumn handicaps at Ellerslie or Riccarton, but is engaged in both the Great Northern Oaks, and Great Northern St, Leger. There is some talk of No Surrender being sent across to Sydney to contest the steeplechases at the A.J.C. autumn meeting. The cost of the trip would be no greater than if he was taken to the Wanganui fixture. The Hawk is a noticeable absentee from the principal events at the Auckland and Canterbury autumn meetings. The Hawk is engaged in the Great Northern St. Leger. Australian papers to hand state that Mr E. A. Connolly refused an offer of 4000gns for the two-year-old Polytheist, which it will be remembered lost the Federal Stakes at Caulfield recently fur weighing in short weight. Mr G. L. Stead has left Royal Box in the New Zealand St. Leger, to be run at the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting. The son of Nassau is down to carry silk at the Ohinemuri meeting, when some idea of his form will be gained, F. Higgott had the misfortune to lose his hurdle horse Prominent, whilst the latter was being - schooled over jumps by W. Bowden. He broke a leg and had to be destroyed. Gay Boy, an aged bay gelding by Gazeley—Sankem’s mare, who won last year’s Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase and raced unsuccessfully at the last Grand National meeting, was sold recently in Napier to Mr C, 'J. Stevens for GG guineas. With the crosscountry season approaching, Gay Boy does not appear to be an expensive purchase. W. Saxby, who was a contemporary of Maher and Wootton when they were contesting the jockey premiership, and was accordingly overshadowed by his more brilliant rivals, was reported to be very seriously ill when the 'last mail left England. Saxby was a good reliable horseman,, who might have been hailed as a’ champion if he had not had the misfortune to be riding at the same time as the crack American and Australian jockeys.
