CHESS.
A teams match for the Giorgi trophies was concluded on Tuesday evening at the Palmerston North Chess Club. The match has been very strenuously contested, the first round resulting in a tie, and the result of the second round being in doubt until the very last, when. Rev. H. G. Blackburne very cleverly sacrificed two knights for a rook and pawn, and obtained a winning pawn position. The winning team are not to be left long in udisturbed possession of the medals, as they are to be challenged immediately. The full results follow, winners being first named:—P. W. Connell 2 v. A. Whitaker 0, H. G. Blackburne 2 v. W. H. Messenger 0, E. W. Cave 1 v. T. . Morine 1. W. Nasmith 0 v. D. Thorburn 2; totals 5 and 3. The play-off for second place in the sealed handicap tourney resulted in a win for A. H. M. Wright, who conceded a pawn and move to L. Thorburn.
