FALSE PRETENCES.
A FEILDING CASE. By persuading Francis Montague Mills that he was the possessor of certain war bonds, Donald Gray, alias 1 "Dolly" Gray, obtained loans ofi sums of money aggregating £24. MiMills having discovered he had been deceived, laid information against, Gray. , , „* Charged with obtaining the sum on £2O by means of a false pretence. Gray was before Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., yestei/iiy. Evidence was given by Francis. 'Montague Mills, detailing the method' employed by Gray. Some 15 months, ago he had borrowed £IOO from the witness, and after the Fellding racesthis month had borrowed a further £2O, saying he would give Mills anorder on a Wellington solicitor for two £IOO war bonds which were worth about £124 each. Both witness and aconsed went to Wellington, and witness then discovered that the war. bonds did not exist. Constable Roach gave evidence that • the accused, while under arrest, had made a voluntary statement admitting, ho had obtained the money by false pretence, expressing great regret for the wrong he had done Mr Mills, and hoping to some day repay him. Gray pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
