CHRISTCHURCH WINS THE SHIELD. A DECISIVE VICTORY. The match for the Heathcote-Wil-liams Cricket Shield, played between the Christchurch and Palmerston North Boys’ High Schools, was concluded in Palmerston North yesterday. The result was a decisive victory for the challengers, Christchurch. At the close of play the previous evening the visitors required only 24 runs to win, and hod lost but one wicket. Yesterday morning Mortlock and Powell, continuing their Innings, knocked up the required runs iu fairly short time. When the 170 mark was peached stumps were drawn, the game being won by nine wickote. Palmerston’s batting had realised a grand total of 2CB. Christchurch, In their first Innings, made 196. In the second innings S, R. Carleton was run out for 69, while the not out men, Mortlock and Powell, complied 68 and 21 respectively. There were 22 extras, making the total for one wicket in the second Innings 170. Mr T. R. Hodder, on behalf of the chairman of the High School Board of Governors, presented the coveted trophy to the Christchurch eaptaln. C. 1* King, and congratulated the team on the excellent performance they had put up, and also the losers, on the hard game they had fought in trying to retain the shield against a team, which was, in his opinion, superior and more experienced. At any rate, Palmerston North had, since 1919-20 season, prevented the Auckland Grammar School and the present victors, from monopolising the shield, In the past it had been held by either one or the other of those schools. The respective captains replied, and cheers were given for es,ch eleven.
