An Auckland telegram states that Mr K. De G. MacVitty, who is to act as American Consul at Auckland, arrived by the Niagara yesterday. Dr Paget and Mr A. L. Westmoreland have been elected to represent the Northern Section on the Committee for the control of the St. Helen’s Home Fund.

, Mr W. Jessen resigned his position as clerk to the Mauriceville County Council on Saturday last. The Council, however, increased his salary by £25 per year, and he withdrew his res'ignation. The Whangarei Hospital Board has appointed Dr J. W. Hall, who is now studying in England, and was formerly of Otago University and the Dunedin Hospital, to the position of medical superintendent of the hospital.

The appointment of the Rev. H. A. Skelton as curate, of St. Mary's Cathedray, Parnell, is announced. Mr Skelton was educated at Felsted and at Keble College, Oxford, and in 1!>10’ was ordained at Winchester to his first curacy at Chertsey. A colonist of nearly 70 years' standing, Mr Alexander Muir, died the other day at Mangere, in his 88th year. Mr Muir, who was born near Glasgow, Scotland, arrived in New Zealand with his parents by the ship Duchess of Argyle, in 1842. Canon E. J. McFarland, of St. Barnabas’ parish, Mount Eden, was farewelled in Auckland on Thursday. Ho is to leave the parish at the end of the month, after about-" twenty years’ charge at St. Barnabas’. At the 'same time Canon Foster, who succeeds the charge, was welcomed. Dr G. Lovell Gregg, M. 8., Ch.B., who has been appointed/medical superintendent of the Grey Hospital, Greymouth, was house-surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, and also honorary surgeon at Clyde and Invercargill Hospitals. At present he is medical superintendent of the Coromandel Hospital.

An old resident of Masterton. Mrs Alex. McLeod, died on Sunday last. The late Mrs McLeod, who was born 1 at the Hutt in 1856, was a daughter of the lato Mr Robert" Wyeth, one of Wellington’s earliest pioneers, who arrived by the ship “Cuba" in 1840. Mr J. Wright, of Foxton, is a brother of the deceased.

The Wanganui “Chronicle” understands that Mr J. Nairn, until recently headmaster of the Durie High School, and now of Ashhurst, is to exchange with a London teacher, and expects to leave for England about" the middle of next year. The exchange is arranged by the New Zealand Education Department and the London County Council.
