PUBLIC SERVICE.
QUESTION OF RETRENCHMENT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Interviewed to-day. the Premier stated that Cabinet had been too busy to consider the details of the retrenchment scheme in the Civil Service. Even the suggested 10 per cent, reduction was i|nly tentative. This, or whatever percentage of reduction was finally determined upon, would probably apply to all salaries where the salary itself has been increased, but where the increase lias been made by way of cost of living bonus, whatever reduction may take place must correspond with the reduction in the cost of living. The percentage of decrease in cases of actual increase of salarywas not necessarily basojl on the cost of living. It was not necessary to go back to the 1914 wagos and salaries. It was not intended to depart from any undertaking given by the Government in regard to the reduction in wages and salaries.
