The ceremony of conferring the degree of Doctor of Literature on Sir Rudyard Kipling and Sir James Frazer was in the nature of an international function. The amphitheatre •of Sorbonne was packed with a multitude who accorded the British recipients an ovation. Professor Legouis, of the University of Paris, said that Sir Rudyard Kipling had. won celebrity in the Anglo-Saxon half of the world at the age of 25, and had conquered the rest of the planet at 35. French orators, who analysed Sir Rudyard Kipling's works, evoked thunderous applause on indicating: that the majority of those present were acquainted with them. Sir James Frazer and Sir Rudyard Kipling replied, after which Madame Segondweber, of the Comedie Francaise, recited, with wonderful dramatic force, Kipling's "Ode to France," which moved the audience to tears and cheers.
