FARMERS’ UNION.

SUB-PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE MEETS. The Manawatu Sub-provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union met on Saturday. ■ Mr. A. Buchanan presided. A letter was received from Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, in reply to the Executive’s resolution urging the . appointment of an agricultural instructor for the subprovincial' district, advising that while ho fully realised that the present staff of instructors was considerably smaller than was desired by the farming community, and much as ho would like to comply with their wishes in the matter, he was reluctantly compelled to state that in view of the great pressure which was being brought to bear on the Government to reduce expenditure, he could not see his way to recommeild the appointment of additional Instructors at this juncture. It was sincerely hop. ed that when the financial position warranted it, the activities of the Department in Instructional work would be able to be increased. —Mr. Brook-Taylor (Rangiotu) vigorously contended that at a time like the present, when farmers were up against it, it was all the more necessary that additional instructors should be appointed to teach them how to work their land to its fullest, capacity.—lt was considered -that nothing further would be done in the matter, and the letter was received. In a further letter the Minister stated that the establishment Of a short course of special Instruction for farmers at tJlie Central Development Farm at Weraroa was already in con. teraplation. It was intended next win. ter to do what was possible in this direction with the limited- number of specially trained officers at present available on the Department’s staff, who were already carrying out a large volume of instructional work Received, No comment from branches having been received on the following remit, it was ordered to be forwarded to the Provincial Executive: —(4) Manukau —"That this branch suggests that steps be taken by the union with the object of making various central branches of the union, and other approved farmers’ institutions, agencies, for tho purchase and disposal of farm properties at a nominal fee, and where particulars of properties of those desirous of selling cap be filed for scrutiny of Intending purchasers.” "That this meeting is interested in finding ways and means for manufacturing dessicated meats, extracts of meat, mutton, ham*), pressed meats, and potted meats, of the finest and most appetising kind for home and foreign markets."
