SWIMMING.
It is very gratifying to learn that in recent years the interest in swimming has developed in a remarkable degree in the Manawatu district. This is largly due, no doubt, to the enthusiasm that is displayed by School Committees and teachers. Swimming is not only useful for the preservation of life, but it develops the muscles of the body and produces health and vigour. In a Dominion like New Zealand, where there is an abundance of fresh and salt water, there is no reason why any boy or girl should grow to manhood without a knowledge of swimming. Indeed, this exercise should have a place upon the curriculum of every primary and secondary school in the Dominion. The cultivation of habits of cleanliness will have have a potent influence upon the lives of the rising generation, for these habits invariably have the effect of producing clean-living in after life. The formation of swimming clubs, and the holding of swimming sports, should be encouraged in every district, and the public should show in a practical way its appreciation of the efforts of those who foster these health-giving institutions.
