CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The annual meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce is to be held this evening. The Chamber represents the commercial interests of the community. It has a wide scope for, initiative and enterprise. The function of the institution is not only to criticise the civic administration, but to initiate movements which have for their object the advancement of the material interests of this progressive municipality. Palmerston North has reached a stage in its history when it requires the best brains of its citizens to guide it in its municipal enterprises. It is rapidly assuming the proportions of a city, and in the next decade will probably double its population. Many important projects are shortly to be entered upon, including the installation of hydro-electric power. The Chamber of Commerce can bq of great assistance to the Borough Council and to the ratepayers in closely scrutinising every project that is initiated, and in offering suggestions of a practical character for the guidance of those who exercise administrative functions. One can scarcely over-estimate the value to the community of a live-wire Chamber. It is the live-wires who count in the advancement of every municipality. Hence the necessity for all progressive business men identifying themselves with the institution, and using their utmost endeavours to stimulate industry and commerce along sound and economic lines.
