BOWLING.

PALMERSTON REGAINS DIXON CUP. On Saturday bowling activities in Palmerston North were confined principally to the Terrace End Club’s greens, where the first gala day of the local season was held. The weather was beautifully fine,* and the greens were in very good playing condition. Visiting rinks were present from Manawatu (3), Palmerston (2), Feilding (2), Foxton and Shannon, and all the matches played were keenly contested and thoroughly enjoyed. Much interest centred in the Dixon Cup match, also played on these greens. Terraco End Club, the holder from last season, was represented by G. Bailey, J. Reid, W. Tapp and J. Wallace (skip). The challengers, from the Palmerston North Club, were R. G. Welch, G. N. Stephenson, H. Seifert and N. H. Nash (skip). The result was a win for the challengers by 18 points to 9, only 20 heads being played. Palmerston evened up the scores on the fifth head—3 all —Terrace End having opened the scoring. Thereafter, Palmerston drew steadily ahead, but the scoring was but small. On the tentli head the board read 7-4, but by the time the 15th head was reached Palmerston had a substantial lead, 13-7. Terrace End failed to make any appreciable headway. It was unnecessary to proceed after the 20th head, when Palmerston was unbeatable. While the scores indicate a decidedly easy victory, each head had to be fought with the utmost care and skill. Admittedly, the Palmerston representatives, as a whole, were superior, but their opponents, who played really well, were "up against it” all the way. At no time did either side gain more than two points off any head, while single points predominated. The president of the Terrace End Club, Mr D. J. Lovelock, presented the winning skip (Mr Nash), with the much-coveted trophy. Replying, Mr Nash referred to the fine spirit with which the game was played, and said it was one of the most pleasant contests he had taken part in. PALMERSTON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. The first round of the Palmerston North Club championship rinks contest was completed on Saturday. Details are: Jolly (s), Crump, Wilson and Vautier (21), beat J. A. Nash (s), Pickering, Hodgins and Kerslake (19); N. PI. Nash (3), PI. Seifert, Stuart and Hancock (20) beat Needham (s), Trott, Morshead and Welch (IS); Ramsay (s), Livingstone, Stevenson and Grant (22) beat PTaser (s), Jones, Dixon and Bilderbeck (19). The pairs and singles championships are in progress. GENERAL. The Woodville Club held a most successful gala day on Saturday. The Bulls Club opens its season on Wednesday next at 2 p.m. Representatives from Palmerston North Clubs will be present. Masterton is next on the list of challengers for the Dixon Cup, and will visit the Palmerston Club’s greens on Saturday in search of the trophy.
