SWIMMING.

MANAWATU CENTRE. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Centre of the N.Z. Swimming Association was held In Mr H, L, Young’s office In Palmerston North last night. Mr Young occupied the chair. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The annual report was read as follows: —“In presenting the annual report and balance-sheet, I have to congratulate you on the result of last year’s efforts as regards the art of swimming in this district. It was quite successful from a financial point of view, and the work done by,the different schools round the district enabled this Centre to come second in New Zealand for swimming certificates. Wellington was first with 696, Manawatu second with 547, Hawke’s Bay third with 364, which speaks volumes for the interest shown by members of the Swimming Clubs, and particularly members of the Clubs which belong to the schools, for the interest they have taken In teaching the younger generation to swim. You will recognise that as per head or population, Manawatu easily wins, and as the secretary has already got into touch with the different schools, asking them to make a special effort to secure swimming certificates this season, it is expected we will head the list for New Zealand this season. We were fortunate in securing the appearance of Miss Bleibtrey, the lady champion swimmer of the world, ana a great gathering greeted her at the baths, where she gave an exhibition and very willingly showed the methods used by her in the water. Later in the season we were visited by Miss Shand, a New Zealand champion swimmer, and Miss Brlsted, New Zealand champion lady diver, both of whom gave exhibitions and much useful Instruction to those Interested. We have to thank Mr Danahey, of the Opera House Pictures, for his practical interest in junior swimming, and the matinee he put on which resulted in a profit of £l2 16/6 to the Centre. The New Zealand Council recognised our efforts, and subscribed £25 to the funds for the promotion of swimming in this district. The Manawatu Centre was represented at the N.Z. championships for the 220yds by Mr Leeder, who was unsuccessful in being placed. I wish to thank the committee for the able assistance they have given me during the season, and also for the capable services rendered by Mr Kibblewhitc, the hon. secretary.” ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J. A. Nash, MP.; president, Mr H. L. Young; vice-presidents, the presidents of affiliated clubs; committee, Messrs Horn, Eades, Train, Buchler, Martin, Fleming, de Berry, Devine, Robbie. Educational officers, Mr Kibblewhlte. Mr Coulter, of Christchurch, was appointed representative on the New Zealand Centre. The New Zealand Council was thanked for a grant of £25. The sum of £2 was donated to the Glen Oroua School, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Train for valuable services. It was resolved to ask Clud secretaries to forward dates of swimming carnivals for the season. The proposed tour of Harris, one of the world’s leading swimmers, was discussed, but no definite information has been received from the centre in regard to his itinerary.
