WEST END SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE MEETING. The committee of the West End School met last night. Present: Messrs Jno. Rose (In the chair), P. H. Parr, W. B. Pressnell, B. H. Just and C. J. Page; TENNIS COURTS LOANED. Mr Buchler Introduced a deputation from the West End Tennis Club. Mr Campbell, the spokesman, stated that It was desired the school courts be lent to the club for the season. They would give every assistance to place the grounds In proper playing order, and to maintain them in such a state during the playing season. The club was willing to donate £5 towards the preliminary cost. It was recognised that the hours of play would have to be defined so that the school would not be inconvenienced In any way. He suggested the hours being in the early morning and after 4 p.ra. each day. On holidays the club would like whole possession. Replying to a question, Mr Campbell said there was no desire ♦o Interfere with the senior scholars. The chairman suported the request of the deputation, pointing out that If they had the grounds it would assist sport in West !End, and no doubt the senior school children would bo brought into the sport. By acceding to the request the grounds would be more expeditiously and expensively put In order and maintained. Members, generally, were in favour of granting the request, the only contentious points being in the matter of hours and the nature of the conditions. The committee decided to loan the courts to the club on condition that the hours of play be up to 8 #’clock in the morning and after 4 o’clock in the afternoons, the club to give way to any special school matches. Mr B. H. Just offered to lend a roller free of charge. The committee made the suggestion to the deputation that the club allow junior players membership at a special fee. . GENERAL. The headmaster (Mr A. O. Buchler) reported that the roll number was 349, with an average attendance of 324. The annual examinations of the classes was now being held, and the final proficiency test would take place on December 2. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn visited the school on Thursday and selected a few pupils to attend the health camp to be held at Turaklna this month. The combined school sports were set down for December 7, at the Showgrounds. The united 00-operation of the committee was solicited to assist the teachers in making the function a success. Mr Just donated £1 towards the prize fund for the combined sports, and Mr Parr £2 towards the school prize fund. The committee decided to empower the teachers to carry out the annual prize-giving, and that they be allowed to spend up to £7 (inclusive of Mr Parry's donation of £2). Mr P. H. Parr urged that the committee put down a substantial cricket pitch for the boys. Previous efforts in this direction had not been very successful. Mr Just’s offer to take the matter in hand, with a view to constructing a pitch of soil and clay, was accepted with thanks,
