DAIRY EXPORTS.

A TRADE REVIEW. Messrs W. H. Turnbull and Co., Wellington, in reporting on dairy produce prospects, based on cables received from their principals,. Messrs W. Weddell and Co., Ltd.* during the past month, state that on 25th October Messrs W. Weddell and Co'., Ltd., cabled that they estimated the 1 British Government’s stocks of butter, roughly, at 30,000 tons, comprising 17,000 tons Australian, 8000 tons Argentine, and 2000 tons of other butter. Apart from 1500 tons of Irish butter, there were no private stocks of any account. Cheese stocks they estimated at 10,000 tons of North American, and 8100 tons of Australasian. Messrs Turnbull add:—-‘‘Prospects: Our principals cable that prospects for butter at the moment are unfavourable in view of the enormous Government stocks, and also stocks of Irish butter In cool store. It Is expected that heavy supplies will be forthcoming from Australia, Argentine and New Zealand, and as the industrial depression iiind unemployment is limiting the purchasing power ofthe consumers, the future prospects are far from bright, At present it is very difficult to make any forecast as to what prices our new season’s butter and cheese will bring. As‘will be seen from the above cables, quotations for Danish butter are firming weekly, but doubtless Danish are in very short supply. The point of most interest is the tremendous difference in the quotation for Danish, 262/-, and New Zealand free butter, 200/-, and we feel. that very high grade New Zealand new season’s butter should bring considerably better prices than those qiioted for free butter at presents There is no doubt that factories should pay more attention to quality: than ever before, as we feel sure that the difference in prices realised for high grade and medium grade butter will be very marked. “Shipments.—Shipments from New Zealand in September consisted of 17,611 boxes of butter, whilst in October 133,869 boxes of butter and 36,542 crates of cheese were shipped.” Cablegrams published show New Zealand batter on 21st October at' 205/- per cwt, and on 11th November 188/- to 200/-. New Zealand cheese; On Ist October, white 88/- to 96/- per cwt, coloured SO/- to 90/-; on 11th November, white 88/- to 96/-, coloured 84/- to 88/-.
