FLOWER SHOW.

SUCCESSFUL WILLARD HO.ME EXHIBITION. The annual flower show in connection with the Willard Children’s Home was held in the Empire Hall yesterday. The display of blooms of all descriptions at the show was a remarkably beautiful one. With the exception of the big storm on Labour Day, the season has been a particularly good one for (lowers, and this was reflected in the splendid quality'of the exhibits. The number of exhibits was considerably in excess of those at last year’s show. The arrangements were in the capable hands of Miss I. Mayo, as secretary, and an energetic committee of ladies assisted her. A large number of people visited the i show both in the afternoon and in | the evening, and good business’ was | done in connection with the different stalls. The following were the stallholders; —Flower stall, Mrs Young and Mrs Burnard; sweet stall, Mrs Nathan and Miss Bennett; produce stall, Mrs McDonald and Mrs Free; line needlework, Mrs Sinclair, Mrs A. Bennett and Mrs G. Bennett; bran tub, Miss Holbrook: afternoon tea, Mrs Barnett and Mrs Gibbs and assistants; baby show, Mrs Carter and Mrs McFerran. Pianoforte selections were given by Misses McDonald, Stiles (2), and Miss Robertson during the afternoon, and the Soldiers’ Orchestra played selections during the evening. Mr C. F. Spooner, in formally opening the exhibition, said that it had a two-fold purpose. In the first place it was to supplement the funds of the Willard Home. Everyone knew that there were continual recurring expenses in connection with the Home, and it was necessary for the ladies concerned in its administration to organise various functions. ' The public had always responded readily to the laudible efforts. The shows organised by the Society had always been highly successful. In the second place the exhibition would serve to further cultivate the aesthetic taste in this town. Such a display as the present one could not do other than increase the love for the beautiful. Mr Spooner congratulated the Willard Home management on arranging such a beautiful display of flowers. It was certainly one of the best ever seen in Palmerston North, and he hoped the Society would continue with its shows. Mr Spooner presented two special trophies, have to be won three times. The first was the Society’s trophy valued at £5 5/-, won this year by Mrs R. McKenzie, for twelve varieties of roses. The second was Mr Shailer’s trophy for one rose bloom. This was secured by Mr Bond,
