DEATH IN TRAIN.

A SAD OCCURRENCE.

ELDERLY LADY COLLAPSES.

' When yesterday's Wellington-New Plvmouth express train drew into the Palrnerston North station, the body of • Mrs Hannah Rogers was removed, and conveyed to the Palrnerston N. morgue. Mrs Rogers, a lady of 84 years, was being accompanied on the : journey to her home in New Plymouth by her son. She had been staying with friends or relatives inCanterbury. When the late Mrs Rogers boarded the express at Thorndon station, she appeared to be in her usual state of health, but on reaching the Shannon district she became unwell, in fact so ill that Palrnerston North was communicated with from the Tok'omaru Station, in order to have medical aid ready immediately the train arrived. It was not long before Mrs Rogers totally collapsed, and she expired just before Longbum was reached. The Palrnerston North police took charge of the body on Its arrival, and had it sent to the morgue. Mr Rogers, the son, who is himself an elderly man, was much distressed. During the past two years Mrs Rogers had not been medically attended, but had previously been examined for an affection of the heart. Her health had not been of the best of late. In view of the fact that the deceased lady was not being attended by a doctor imme. diately prior to her death, an inquest was considered necessary. This was formally opened by the Coroner yesterday afternoono and adjourned to allow f evidence being procured.
