SOUTHLAND v. AUSTRALIA. (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Last Night. The Australians commenced a twoday match against Southland to-day in beautiful weather. The home team won the toss and batted on a good wicket. Southland opened with Kavanagh and Gleeson, to the bowling of Pellew and Hornibrook. Disaster came early, Gleeson being bowled by the Queenslander with the score at 4. Poole joined Kavanagh, and a useful partnership answered. After opening scratchlly, Poole became aggressive and the runs came rapidly. Kavanagh was giving a rare exhibition of running between the wickets. The two wickets fell quickly, but another partnership, Gilbertson and Hamilton, took the score on to 74. Both played good cricket. The wickets again fell fast, but the last wicket stand by Petrie and Bogue, two colts, produced some bright cricket. Hornibrook bowled splendidly, but the other bowlers were not very difficult. Southland’s innings lasted for 109 minutes. The Australians opened well, Richardson and Bogle playing patiently and Correctly, Liddlcutt and Lampard following. Bogle batted brightly, but Richardson, who was almost stonewalling, was hard to shift. His 39 runs were made in 64 minutes. About this time Mcßeath, who plays for New Zealand in the first Test, was taken off the southern end, where he had taken no wickets for 26 runs. With the breeze behind him he kept a beautiful length, and bowled in brilliant style, taking four wickets, including Ransford* for 25 runs. The last wicket partnership between Ironmonger and Hornibrook was a spectacular display. Both men went for the bowling, and although they were missed several times, they added nearly 50 runs to the score. The Australians batted for 21 hours. The veteran Dolg bowled unchanged throughout, and kept down the runs well. The home fielding was patchy. SOUTHLAND. —First Innings.
