the mayoralty. (To the Editor.) Sir,—l read “Elector’s” letter in your issdo of even date. I did not place the responsibility for the present financial difficulties in which tho Council finds itself on the Mayor s shoulders. The point of my communication was simply that it was immaterial who was chosen by the citizens to act a. 4 Mayor for tho ensuing term, as the financial conditions ruling would preclude works being carried out. I wanted to make clear that whether Mr Nash or another is chosen Mayor it does not lie within the province of citizens to blame the holder of the office should work practically cease for want of the necessary funds. J yield to no one in my appreciation of Mr Nash’s public-spirit-odness and ability in the service of tho people of Palmerston North, but f do think it is high time we realised that there are other men in this town who covet the honour of being given similar opportunity. It is a laudable ambition to look forward to filling the highest civic dignity the town can confer, and that opportunity should be freely available without reflecting upon the capacity of the present holder of tho chair. It should hardly be. necessary for aspirants to honour to wait till death causes a vacancy. I for one trust that Mr Nash will not yield to importunity to stand again. He has a wide field of usefulness, politically and otherwise, which lie fills with effect and satisfaction, even to those people who do not share his political views.—l am. etc., W. R. BIRNIE.
