Nurses Charters and Verey (late of Dunedin) have taken over the "Lpvuka’ Nursing Home, Fltzherbert Street, from Nurse Hall • Mr Walter P. Monk, representing J. and N. Tait, was in town yesterday making arrangements for the'appearance of “Irene” on February 18 and 24.

Those friends who had the privilege of knowing Mr D. S. Columb during his residence here will be extremely sorry to hear of his death, which occurred at Dunedin. Mr A. O. Tovey, the local master. takes his annual leave of absence from to-day. Mr M. B. Esson, of the head office staff, will act as postmaster. Mr Esson is a brother of Colonel Esson, of the Treasury.

Mr and Mrs C. E. Shortt lea,ve today on a month’s holiday trip. 1 They will visit Napier, Taupo and Rotorua. Mr Shortt’s position as Registrar of Electors, Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and borough librarian have kept him closely at work for over two years without a holiday. A pleasing little function took place at the Palace Pictures on the occasion of the return to the orchestra of Mr Cliff Mowlem, the well-known Palmerston violinist. Mr Mowlem has recently joined the Hanedicts, and the members of the orchestra presented him with a handsome pair of vases. Mr A. J. Berryman made the presentation, and Mr Mowlem suitably responded.

The swimmers of Palmerston North will be pleased to know that Miss Shand, who beat Miss Walrond, the Olympic lady champion 'at the New Zealand championships over all distances, will, appear in Palmerston North on the 26th February at the local club’s carnival. Miss Shand has just succeeded in breaking the world s record for 440 yards, which speaks well .for a New Zealand girl. A host of useful ribbons are going half price to-day. at Collinson and Cunninghame’s. This week-end reduction includes all their ribbon remnants.
