BRANDING A GIRD. An extraordinary story was told at Bombay Criminal Sessions during the hearing of a case of assault by an fndian woman on her 16-year-old daughter-in-law. The evidence showed that the woman treated the girl with systematic cruelty, starving her and branding her periodically on the face, tongue and body with red-hot irons. For the defence it was urged that the reason for the torture was that the girl had brought bad luck, and there had been frequent loss ol cattle. The judge regarded this superstition as mitigating the circumstances, and imposed IS months’ imprisonment and a heavy fine.
