3SS «i » i FIXTURES. June 18 and 19—Napier Parte R.C. June 13 —Hawke's Bay Hunt Club. i June 2 3 —Hawke's Bay Hunt Club. July 14 and 17—Wellington R.C. July 22 S. Canterbury Hunt Club. July 29 —Brackenfield Hunt Club. NOTES. There will be racing at Napier Park on Friday and Saturday next. Acceptances for first day events are due to-night. F. D. Jones, trainer of the champion three-year-old Amythas. is spending a few days in this district, and is filling in time at game shooting. As a result of their failure to get awav to Australia, both Ijochella and Grahclia remain at Ellerslie in charge of C. Christie, and if their are no prospects of going across the water it. is quite probable they will be seen out at Hastings or Wellington. T. Metcalfe, the English rider, who came out to the Dominion with Panmure and Co., is in town. Tommy has been riding with a fair amount of success down south this season. Royal Abbey's performance in winning three races in succession at the A.R.C. winter meeting was the best registered by a hack for a long time. On the opening day, with an Bst minimum, he won the first division of the Jervois Handicap very easily with 9st 31b in the saddle, then raised to list 31b, with a 9st minimum, he won the Ranfurly Handicap comfortably, to crown these successes on the concluding day by winning the Fit/.roy Welter very easily under 12st 31b. The track conditions may have suited Roval Abbey, but it would have taken a bit more than the load he carried to have stopped him on the last day. Mr Kemball nearly secured him at the sale on Tuesday, but fortunately for his owner a hitch occurred, and the sale was not completed. Royal Abbey is by Quin Abbey from that one-time good performer Uranium, Avhich, when racing as a live-year-old, won six races in succession, a treble at the Thames meeting, the Maiden at the AR.C. summer meeting, and the Anniversary Handicap and Welter Handicap lat the Takapuna summer meeting.

H. Goldfinch sustained a fractured foot owing to being pressed on the rails while riding at Otaki, and he is not likely to be seen in the saddle for some little time. It is stated that the Ellerslie horseman has been offered a retainer to ride for a prominent Southern owner.

Waimai, who has been delayed in Riccarton, is to remain there to undergo a preparation for the Grand National Steeplechase.

The three-year-old Glen Canny wound up the season nicely at Ellerslie by winning the Cornwall Handicap and King George Handicap, the stakes attaching to which ran out to the nice sum of £I2OO. Glen Canny was bought as a yearling in Melbourne for 325 guineas in the autumn of 1917. Got by Carbine's well-tested son, Pistol, Glen Canny can boast of a dash of great blood, while on the dam's side he is also stoutly bred, for his dam, Bridge of Roses, was got by Bridge of Canny (a son of Love Wisely) from Lady Penzance, a daughter of Queen's Birthday (son of Hagioscope).

The racecourse detective question looks like being a prominent one at the forthcoming New Zealand Racing Conference, who are moving in the matter, in addition to which the Whangarei Racing Club have the folio win;;' notice of motion: —"That this club desires to bring under the notice of the conference the unsatisfactory conditions prevailing in the appointment of racecourse detectives, and ask that the Minister of Internal Affairs undertake the appointments, as is done in the case of totalisator inspection."

The stipendiary stewards appear to have at last realised that others besides owners, trainers and jockeys are liable to bet with bookmakers, for among the notices of motion to be l) ion slit forward at the annual meetinsc of the New Zealand Racing Conference is one that reads: —"No steward shall directly or indirectly make anv wager with a bookmaker in connection with any race." To this might be added: —"No steward or committeeman shall ask a bookmaker to lay off any double he has backed, more especiallv when he knows that one leg of such double is amiss, and not likely to start." II- only half one hears is true, the suggested addition is of more importance than the notice of motion.

During the recent A.R.C. winter meeting- twenty-two races figured on the card, and fourteen different trainers furnished winners during- the three days over which the meeting extended. C. Coleman claimed a double winner in Oakleig-h, and he won a single with Deviation. It. Hannon claimed a treble winner in Royal Abbey, C. Christie won twice with Lochella. W. Smith had a double winner in Glen Canny, while J. Williamson scored respectively with Koura and Totara Jack, and T. M. Morris with Ngata and Monopole. The other trainers represented on the winning list, with thenrespective victors, were: —P. E. Pope (Kerehone), A. Robertson (Comedy Prince), J. C. Lambess (Kauri King), W J Irwin (Hyllus), A. Julian (Slowcoach), W. Hawthorne (Mill o' Cowrie), J. H. Wallace (Tama-a-roa), and Mrs M. Shaw (Keystone). There was a tie for first place among four jockeys contesting at the. A.R.C. meeting. W. C. Feilding won a double on Lochella and a single on Slowcoach. A. E. Warner scored twice on Oakleigh and once on Deviation, C Reed won a double on Grlen Canny and a single on Tama-a-roa. while H. J. Robinson won three tunes on Roval Abbey. The other successful riders.' with their respective winningmounts, were as follows:—R. Morris (Ngata), J. J. Roach (Kerehone), S. Henderson (Koura), B. ,~ e f le> (Comedy Prince), D. Packer ( lotara Jack), W. Rowe (Kauri King), H ; Gray (Hyllus), W. Rennie (Mill o Go wrie). ' W. March ant (Keys tone), and Mr %. Terry (Monopole). The following resolution has been passed by a special meeting of the committee of the Hawke's Bay JocKe* dub: —"That in the opinion ot tins committee the sport of racing cannot be continued while there is a registered iockeys' union, but that: the reasonable and proper representations 01 n jockevs' association placed be!ore the conference in proper terms should receive the fair and full consideration of the chairman and members, and that every effort should be made to meet any reasonable demands of the ioekeys bearing on their conditions of employment, and that in this respect the conference may re \ on the whole support of the committee in any action it may take The winter is now here in real earnest and you will want a ram coat to keep the wet out and a warm one to keep the cold out, whilst attending the winter meeting. Alf- Mahon, tne sporting mercer, The Square, has just the thing you want. Call on him today and make a purchase.*
